Table Culture: The Lemines

Table Culture is about people. It is about people’s stories at the table as they unfold, effortlessly.

There are few experiences more personal and fulfilling than sharing a meal with someone. Sharing a meal opens the door to deep connection.

We want to capture the powerful story that lives within those daily bread-breaking experiences. We want to share that with the world, in hopes to raise appreciation for the ordinary things we live everyday, often taken for granted.

Last summer, Meghan reached out to us to learn more about our Table Culture project. A few weeks later, we were spending some time with her, her husband Matt, and their adorable dog, Ausley. The three of them live in a beautiful, light filled studio in NE Portland, just above one of our favorite coffee shops in town!

Matt and Meghan welcomed us into their apartment, as Ausley kept a close eye on us to make sure we were okay to be in such proximity to her favorite humans. As we made ourselves comfortable, Meghan chopped vegetables, made a sauce, and finished preparations for the meal as we exchanged stories about travel, work, and creative endeavors.

Matt works in the accounting department at a really cool company in the music industry and Meghan is a food blog writer and food photographer. Meghan seemed to be in charge in the kitchen, while Matt appeared to be the one on shift to make sure our wine glasses were filled (thanks Matt!).

Meghan had recently started a food blog, Winnow, in the middle of a journey of healthy eating, after discovering her own food sensitivities. She is eager to change the paradigms around sensitive diets and educate us all on how navigating our way through special dietary needs does not have to mean boring meals or terribly restrictive menus.

It was uplifting to see how the two of them (and Ausley!) moved about in the small but incredibly practical space. It was almost as if Matt knew exactly what Meghan needed, when she needed it — like draining the noodles or setting their foldable table.

After a delightful dinner at The Lemines’, appetizers included, we feel strongly that Meghan is quite right about food for sensitive diets! Those gluten free noodles with a cashew sauce, a delicious load of vegetables, and a jalapeño dressing that added the right amount of kick were just what we needed on a July evening.

We loved getting a glimpse of The Lemines’ Table Culture, their relationship with food, and their joy in everyday moments.
